Matchbox Studio

Strong creative teams make strong design work, as this Dallas-based design studio shows. Liz Burnett looks the very picture of the Dallas business-person as she picks me up for a day at Matchbox Studio ... The partners happily acknowledge that the firm doesn’t have a signature visual style. Instead, the work ranges freely, from cheeky, in-your-face graphics for BrainDead Brewing (“the only art we’ve ever done that the client has tattooed on his body,” observes Breazeale) to chill, urban minimalism for One Uptown, a Dallas development ... Did I ever guess we’d put a chicken on Big Tex’s head for our theme art?” marvels Schuder. “No. Matchbox always knows exactly when and how to push it ...

Boom Boom Music Festival

Perky Bros and Ryan Dunlap capture this music festival’s high energy on its site. In its inaugural year, Boom Boom Music Festival is the first event of its kind at the Legend Valley outdoor concert venue in Thornville, Ohio. As the festival showcases rap and electronica artists, Nashville-based design agency Perky Bros realized that its site called for something similarly energetic. With development by Ryan Dunlap, the site features a pleasantly rudimentary design. “In the same way the name ‘Boom Boom’ uses the fundamental elements of rhythm, we used pixels throughout the design to reflect the idea visually,” says Rex Runyeon, art director and designer at Perky Bros. “We paired a flat, vibrating illustration style with a loud color palette.” Type reverts sporadically from a regular state to a screen state, and Perky Bros manipulated imagery to move and feel active, while still maintaining an elemental feel. The result is high energy and rhythmic, just like the music that will resound at Boom Boom.  boomboomfest.com ...

Ken Fandell: Blowouts Bricks Lines

This will be Fandell’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. This show is comprised of three series of unique, composite photographs: Blowouts: montaged photographs of a single 7-foot tread from a blown-out truck tire, which the artist retrieved from the side of a Southern California freeway ... In these series, Fandell returns to what he calls the “basics of making art”: line, shape, color and volume. Familiar objects stand in for materials more commonly used in painting and sculpture: palm tree trunks turn into quirky drawn lines, tire tread remnants are twisted into curled and coiled shapes, and bricks become rectilinear, colored solids ... The resulting pictures both communicate and obscure Fandell’s composite process, one that blurs the lines between the conceptual and the physical in art making ... with exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art ... the University of Delaware, the Asheville Museum of Art, and the Houston Center for Photography. His work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University ...
