"Diovadiova Chrome": Solo exhibition by Kip Omolade @ Jonathan LeVine Projects

Jonathan LeVine Projects is pleased to present Diovadiova Chrome, a solo exhibition of work by New Jersey-based artist Kip Omolade in what will be his debut solo show at the gallery. Omolade creates hyperreal oil paintings of chrome portrait sculptures. Depicting solely the sculpture against a brightly colored, monochrome background, he meticulously illustrates the intricacies of the human face and the reflected surrounding environment. The show opens November 18, and runs through December 16, 2017.

“My current self-portrait captures the energy of Times Square, but expands the focus and scale to reveal a portrait about the United States.” Kip Omolade closes out 2017 with his massive eight-foot-tall self-portrait set for Jonathan LeVine Projects, noting that, “Within the main portrait, my face is placed between political and commercial symbols. My goal was to position my art in the historical canon of self-portraits while holding a mirror up to society.” Omolade has been generating a gigantic buzz in the gallery world with his incredibly labor-intensive works. Each painting starts with molding and casting of a model’s face, then, as the gallery explains, Omolade “reworks the cast plaster sculpture, producing a version in resin and adding a chrome layer with artificial eyelashes. The final sculpture then serves as a model for the hyper-realistic oil painting.” The end results are stunning chrome masks, painted in futuristic glow and resonating as portals to ancient African sculptures. —Evan Pricco
