1. Getting started

The aim of the portal is to provide users with a tool that provides comprehensive information about the Art from the Internet in a single window mode.

The portal gives users the opportunity to search and view materials on topics of interest, as well as receive digests automatically  by setting up a subscription to information sections.

  • Authorization menu: Registration, Login to your account (item 1).
  • Language menu:  Interface language, language of the  documents (item 2).
  • Main menu of the Portal: List of the main sections (section 3).
  • Search block: entry field of the keywords, the cloud of context clues, the source choice button, the documents date choice fields, the search activation button (step 4).
  • The list of the documents:  the date of placement, the source, the summary, the list of pages with the documents, the number of retrieved documents (section 5).
  • Informative block: Terms, Contacts (section 6).

2. Registration at the portal

For authorization at the portal it is necessary to follow the link "office" - it will be offered to enter an e-mail and the password on which the registration on a portal was carried out earlier, then to press the Enter button

If the user has not been previously registered, please click "Register" link – you’ll be redirected to registration page, where it is necessary to specify the personal data and to specify desirable language of the interface  and the language of receiving documents (Figure 2.2.). Then press the "Register" button.

3. Setting subscription

Registered users have the ability to customize personal subscriptions to interesting thematic sections of the portal.

To set up a subscription, follow the link "Subscribe." There will be a transition to the page "My Subscriptions"

4. The portal search

The portal possesses a powerful search engine, that combines both traditional keyword search and contextual search. The rubrication and search are produced both in the text and in titles of documents.

To search for the required documents there is a search form. To start the search, it is necessary to enter the query, according to the syntax of the search language (see 4.2. "The rules for searches"). Usually, it is enough to enter required keywords and phrases.

You can specify additional search settings such as filtering documents by date. To indicate a time limit of required documents, it is necessary to fill  the fields "from ... to ..."

User can choose the interface language: Russian or English, and also the language of required documents:  English, Russian, English and Russian

4.1. Interface of a search form

The interface of the search form includes:

  • The input field  of "keywords" , which may be filled in two ways, by entering the search words manually, or automatically -  by pressing the corresponding hints in the context clues cloud.
  • The context clues cloud, in which the tips appear during the search process.

The portal provides the ability to specify the sources, where the documents should be retreived. To do this, press the button "Sources" and check necessary sources and press "OK".

4.2. Rules of search request making

There are several ways to make a search request:

  • Searching by keyword. Any word in English or Russian, as well as any alphanumeric sequence which is not words of language may be a keyword. For example, the key words are: Smith, Microsoft, J7, 1992. On request “ Ivanov” all the documents in which the word Ivanov meets will be found.

Remark 1. By default, search is made with morphology. For example, by a request for a word  “find” you will get the documents, containing all forms of the word: “will find”, “have found” etc.  If it is necessary to disconnect morphology use, put a sign @ before a keyword.

  • Searching by the beginning of words. There is ability to search coincidence of the beginning of words. For this purpose a percent sign is used (%). For example, by the request of “ar%” there will be the documents, containing any of the words, beginning   with “ar” – “art”, “artist”, etc.

Remark 1. The symbol “%” is allowed only at the end of an inquiry word.

Remark 2. By inadequate use of a symbol of “%” it is possible to receive the requests, which will be carrying out for a very long time.

  • Phrasal search. To find documents containing combinations of words, use double quotes. By default, the search is made with morphology. For example, the request «chinese painting» will find the documents with phrases «chinese painting», «chines paintings» etc. To search with  excluding morphology, use the symbol @ at the beginning of words : "@chinese @painting." It is possible to use in phrases the symbol “%”. By the request for "art% inv%" the system will find documents with the phrase as “art investment" and the "artists involved".  There may be applied keywords to search some concepts.  Thus, the query "raise% to <percent>" finds documents with the following phrases: "has risen by 45 percent", "rose by 12%". If the search phrase has a variable length ("Vladimir Putin" and "Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin"), then it is possible to use the following design for its search: “ Vladimir * { 1 } Putin”, where 1  is the maximum number of words which may meet between the words “Vladimir” and “Putin”. The sequence of the words is important, and the phrase "Putin Vladimir" will not be found. To search the phrases without sequence, it is necessary to use search inside phrases. It is not allowed to use logical expressions in phrases.
  • Logical expressions:
    • Logical OR (symbol |). The request “Ivanov | Petrov will look for a documents, which contain either word Ivanov or word Petrov. Remark: if between the words of inquiry there is no symbols except gaps, it is meant that words are incorporated with the logical OR, i.e. the inquiry Ivanov Petrov is equivalent to inquiry Ivanov | Petrov.
    • Logical AND (symbol &). Inquiry Ivanov & Petrov will look for the documents, which contain both words at the same time.
    • Logical exclusion (symbol -). If word or expression should not meet a request, there should be a sign - before it. Logical exclusion is allowed ONLY in a combination with logical And (Putin & - Vladimir). Application as a request only denials is inadmissible and will lead to a mistake. (-Ivanov is an incorrect inquiry. Ivanov – Petrov is also incorrect, as association goes with logical OR)
  • Obligatory words (symbol +). If the result should contain any of the words you need, put in front of it the sign +. If word in inquiry is the only one or words are incorporated with logical And, it is not obligatory to do that. For example, +Ivanov Petrov Sidorov will return documents which surely contain the word Ivanov. While Petrov and Sidorov will increase the relevance of the found Documents if they meet there. The inquiry +Ivanov +Petrov Sidorov will return the documents which surely contain both of the words Ivanov and Petrov, and Sidorov will increase the relevance.
  • Weight factors (integer*word). Weight factors before words and phrases may be applied to increase or decrease the relevance of the found documents. So, at inquiry 10*Петров & Ivanov first will return the documents in which Petrov was met as much times as possible (thus Ivanov will also be in this document). In this case, the word which was met in the document with a negative weight won't throw out the documents from results, and will lower its relevance. Compare: Ivanov & – Petrov: in the returned documents  there won't be a word Petrov. Ivanov - 1*Petrov  will return the documents where may be a word  Petrov, but the relevance of these documents will be lowered.
  • Grouping of predicates (parentheses). Parentheses are used to combine elementary logic expressions into more complex ones. The expression may contain weight factors as well as the words. The use of expressions in phrases is not provided. The example of group of predicates: (the Central Bank) & emitted.
  • Phrasal search ({predicate length}). In a search language there is a support of search in documents of the phrases of the certain length, satisfying to the predicate which has been set. For this purpose, it is necessary to take a predicate in braces and put a length of the phrase and after a comma. For example, if you want to find a document, where Ivanov and Petrov met at distance from each other not longer than 5 words, it does inquiry of the following look: { Ivanov & Petrov, 5 }. Note that the predicate {Ivanov | Petrov, 5} is equivalent to the predicate Ivanov | Petrov, as it is deciphered  to find phrases in length no more than 5 words, in which there is either Ivanov or Petrov. Obviously, the word Ivanov is a such phrase, and so there will be the same documents, as at the simple inquiry Ivanov | Petrov.

Remark 1. The logical operators AND (&) and OR (|) should be separated from the surrounding words and operators by space. The operator of logic exclusion (-) and a sign of obligation of a

Remark 2. Once again we will remind that the logical expressions and operators described in this section, don't operate in phrases.

4.3. Panel of the search results

In a search result, all the materials and documents answering to the set criteria of search, are displayed in the panel of search results and represent the list of summaries to the found documents in which the words of the text filter are allocated by various colours.

The information on each of the found materials includes the following:

  • The date of placing the material to the portal;
  • The title of the document, which is a reference to the full-text version of the document that opens in a new window;
  • A source from which the material was loaded into the portal;
  • The short summary to the document.

4.4. Working with full-text documents

The user may read the full version of the document in the on-click opened window and receive the detailed information on it. The full version of the document shows the full title of the document, the full text of the document, the date of its publication at the portal. It is also possible to send the link to the original publication in the form of a letter.
