"Africa Is No Island" exhibits photographers working from a distinctly African perspective

A new exhibition at Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden in Marrakech brings together the work of approximately 40 emerging and established photographers who are working from a distinctly African perspective. The artists examine universally relevant cultural concepts of tradition, spirituality, family and the environment, within the context of modern African experiences and daily life. Africa Is No Island celebrates Afrique in Visu’s decade long working practice by selecting artists who have previously shown work on the platform as well as those from within Fondation Alliances’ collection. This platform itself has become a “visual territory”, overcoming borders and reporting different perspectives on, around and from the African continent. The curators have chosen works based on the following three themes; “Je suis ma représentation” (I am my own representation), “Dessiner des géographies” (Drawing Borders) and “Recueillir l’histoire” (Transcribe History). ...

Pow!Wow!Hawaii Murals Recap

This last week artists took to the streets of Kaka'ako - the heart of Pow!Wow! Worldwide - to again transform the neighborhood with a fresh roster of artists. This year's contributing artist list included painters like James Bullough, Ricky Watts, Sam Yong, Lucky Olelo, Tran Nguyen, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Lauren YS, Spenser Little, Kelly Tunstall and a whole lot more.  Centered around a week-long event in Hawaii, POW! WOW! has grown into a global network of artists and organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, a large creative space named Lana Lane Studios, concerts, and live art installations across the globe. The central event takes place during Valentine’s Day week in February in the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu, and brings over a hundred international and local artist together to create murals and other forms of art. The festival is expanding to cities and countries such as Taiwan, Long Beach, Israel, Singapore, Jamaica, Washington D.C., Guam, New Zealand, Germany and more.
