Pulse Contemporary Art Fair Miami Awards Prize to Tony Gum

The Cape Town-based Gum, who is represented by the South African Christopher Moller Gallery, showed a series of five large portraits at the fair. Completed at the start of South Africa’s women’s month this year, the series “Ode to She” expresses and celebrates what it means to be a Xhosa woman. The Lianzhou Museum of Photography Grand Opening

On December 2, The Lianzhou Museum of Photography, China’s first publicly-funded, contemporary photography museum, will open its doors to the public hosting a collection of Chinese and international photography. The museum opening will be inaugurated with four exhibitions: Zhang Hai’er’s series Bad Girls featuring portraits of half-undressed prostitutes, socialites and ordinary women staring provocatively; Albert Watson’s China series of Beijing in 1979, expressing his interest in the everyday man; Zhuang Hui’s Qilian Range series, taken between 2014 and 2016 from his trips to the Qilian Mountains; and the series There Should Have Been Roses by French photographer Baptiste Rabichon, winner of Residency BMW Art and Culture Award, 2017. ...

Li Ming wins Hugo Boss Asia Art Award 2017

Hangzhou-based artist Li Ming has been selected by a team of 12 nominators and five jury members as the winner of the third edition of Hugo Boss’s Asia Art Award. Predominantly working with video and video installations, Li presents a new work, Rendering the Mind (2017) at the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award exhibition at Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (on through 11 February 2018). Li was chosen from a group of four finalists including Tao Hui (China), Yu Ji (China) and Robert Zhao Renhui (Singpore). The award, which focuses on artists from Greater China and Southeast Asia, comes with a cash prize of RMB 300,000 (approximately £34,200). In a statement, Larys Frogier, director of Rockbund Art Museum has commented on Li’s work: ‘His oevre constitutes one of the most meaningful and advanced contemporary visual creations that brilliantly combine performance, video and sound. All in Shanghai: Hugo Boss Asia Art Award 2017 Exhibition

In late June, the four finalists for the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award 2017 were announced. The artists—Li Ming, Tao Hui, Yu Ji and Robert Zhao Renhui—were chosen from a pool of over 30 nominees for their standout exhibitions and artworks produced over the last three years, and for their potential future contributions to artistic discourse. The four were then each allotted one floor of Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum to present a showcase of their past and newly commissioned works. Representing a diverse range of artistic inquiries, from concerns with space and the body to materiality, historical narratives and cinematic representations, the finalists each claimed unique stakes in the prize. The winner of the award will be announced on November 23—in the meantime, audiences can make their own predictions for who will take it home.  ...
